BURY FARM

JOHN WELCH & SON

LOCATION

Bury Farm is situated in the village of Nuthampstead close to Royston in North Hertfordshire see map. Bury Farm is an arable farm growing cereals, oilseeds, and legumes which has diversified in various ways in recent years.

JOHN WELCH & SON

John Welch and Son is the farming side of the business and currently farms around 730 acres in Nuthampstead, Anstey and Meesden. The land is mainly arable growing crops in rotation, including wheat, oil-seed rape, oats, barley and field beans. The farm is the oldest part of the business but has embraced modern technology and farming methods. There is a GPS system on the combine which enables us to plot yield maps and to subsequently apply crop protection products more efficiently. We are also involved in a trial using satellite imaging, again to further efficiency of applications.

DIVERSIFICATION

Bury Farm is operating several different diversification projects:
- BURY FARM BAKERY was the original diversification project which was developed over 14 years ago and is located in a converted stable block on the farm. The Bakery produces quality handmade cakes, biscuits and tarts which are delivered within a 60 mile radius of Bury Farm to South-East Anglia and Central areas. For more information on the bakery and the products available, please click here.

- BURY FARM PARLOUR is a newly converted farm building which is now available for hire as a venue for meetings, conferences, social functions, training days etc. For more information on the Parlour, please click here.

- AGRI-ENVIRONMENT SCHEMES & CONSERVATION. Modern farming is also about working with the environment and Bury Farm became involved in the Pilot Arable Stewardship Scheme in 1998 and has now converted to the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. This has involved grass margins around fields, beetle banks through crops, restricted herbicides applications, pond restoration and hedge planting, all aimed at encouraging natural predators and encouraging sustainability.
